Cooking demos through August at Traverse City's Oryana

Oryana Natural Foods Market has been going strong in Traverse City since 1973, and in the past few years it has expanded to a place that could rival any Whole Foods Market. Yet there's no big corporation involved here -- it is completely member-owned. And put in some time helping out and you get a 10 percent discount at the register.

Beyond the fresh local produce, meats, eggs, grocery and  extensive sectionn of health and beauty products, carefully chosen for their Earth-friendliness, Oryana's Lake Street Kitchen and Café is a hangout for artists and writers all over the area, and if there's no time to stay for coffee or Chai, the selection of fresh carryout foods is exceptional.

Three times a week in August, Nancy Schwalm's popular What's For Dinner Demos offer tastings and cool ways to expand your dollars – delicious, economical, seasonal, and easy to prepare -- plus accompanying recipes.

The demo schedule: 4-6 p.m. Monday, noon-2 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.

Watch for deals and member appreciation days in the fall.
