Avon Protection in Cadillac gets MEDC incentive

A Cadillac company is one of nine receiving state incentives to expand and invest in Michigan.

The Michigan Economic Growth Authority board approved a round of tax incentives for the companies, which are expected to draw about $89 million in either expansion or new locations in the state. Locally, Avon Protection in Cadillac is to receive a state tax credit of almost $600,000 over the next six years.

Avon Protection Systems, Inc. is a subsidiary of Avon Rubber, and makes gas masks, among other industrial protection products. The company is planning to invest $600,000 to expand their production of masks for first responders, and of specialized filters for military use. The expansion is projected to create up to 143 new jobs in Cadillac.

The MEGA board approved a tax credit of $596,354 to draw the company to expand locally rather than looking at a manufacturing site in Maryland for the expansion. The city of Cadillac is also considering additional tax abatements for the project.

The nine projects were chosen after recommendations from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The MEDC's president and CEO, Michael Finney, says this kind of project, supported from many directions, is the kind that will help Michigan's economy rebound and grow.

"As we work to foster business opportunities across a wide spectrum of sectors, we're using every tool in our economic-development arsenal to leverage the kinds of public-private partnerships that attract investment and create jobs for Michigan workers," says Finney.
