Bon Appetit says Traverse City is one of five runners-up for Foodiest Small Town

It should come as no surprise to northwest Michigan residents that Traverse City's been recognized for its passion for food. With the local farmer's markets, wineries, restaurants and, of course, the cherry industry, Traverse City is becoming known as a foodie destination.

Bon Appetit Magazine agrees in this month's issue, naming Traverse City one of five runners- up in its contest to find the "foodiest" small town in America.

"This Lake Michigan town is the host of the annual National Cherry Festival. But there's even more to love here: Mario Batali (who owns a nearby vacation home) is a cheerleader for the area, sophisticated restaurants like Trattoria Stella are booming, and must-see Black Star Farms is part winery, part creamery, part inn, and part farm in Leelanau Peninsula wine country," says the magazine.

The magazine's annual report on the hot spots for food in the country named Boulder, Colo. as the foodiest town for 2010. The criteria were that the town had to have fewer than 250,000 people, good farmers' markets, involved farmers and food media, excellent restaurants and chefs, and a community that loves food.

Along with Traverse City, the other runners-up were Ithaca, N.Y., Louisville, Ky., McMinnville, Ore., and Big Sur, Calif.
