Boyne City is one of a few locations in Michigan receiving grants from the latest round of funding, totaling $110,000, through the federal Historic Preservation Fund.
The award for
Boyne City is $21,000 and is administrated through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority's
State Historic Preservation Office. The other grants are to the City of Detroit. The grants were made under a Certified Local Government preservation program--in other words, they went to local governments.
"We are pleased to assist cities in their preservation efforts by awarding these annual federal dollars," says Brian Conway, State Historic Preservation Officer. "By receiving these grants through the CLG program, both Detroit and Boyne City can continue their drive toward preserving Michigan's history."
Boyne City's $21,000 will go toward hiring a consultant to prepare a nomination of downtown Boyne City as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Detroit grants will be used to hire a consultant to nominate an updated version of the Belle Isle district to the national register, to hire an architect to prepare plans to re-roof the Belle Isle Aquarium, and to hire a consultant to create a master plan for the historic Helen L. DeRoy Auditorium at Wayne State University.
Each of the grants must be matched with local funding and are part of an annual grant disbursement each May.
