L&P offering free CFL lighting coupons

Looking to save money and reduce electricity usage? Well, if you're a customer of Traverse City Light & Power, you're in luck.

The utility provider announced that it is bringing back a popular coupon this month that will allow customers pick up a free three-pack of compact fluorescent light bulbs--more commonly referred to as a CFL. The coupon is available in this month's Light & Power customer bill.

"The CFL giveaway is one method L&P uses to meet the 2008 state mandate that requires all electric utilities to implement an energy efficiency program," says Jim Cooper, manager of communications and energy services. "One of the easiest ways our customers can save energy and money is by switching out their old incandescent light bulbs with CFLs."

It's really a win-win situation. Less energy is used by the light bulbs, which is good for everyone involved as it means that less energy has to be created in order to run them. The biggest difference a customer will see is on their power bill, especially with wide-usage of CFLs in their home. When compared to a traditional incandescent light bulb, CFLs use 75 percent less energy, produce 75 percent less heat and last up to 10 times longer.

Also in this month's bill insert, Light & Power customers will find information on local retailers that will recycle used CFLs for free. CFLs should not be thrown away in your household trash due to a minimal amount of mercury in the bulb. Many retailers will take the used bulbs and dispose of them properly at no charge to the customer.

Coupons can be redeemed at the Light & Power Service Desk in the Governmental Center, located at 400 Boardman Ave., Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
