Munson ranked No. 1 for coronary bypass surgery

It's the second recent recognition of Munson Medical Center's excellence in cardiac care; it has now been ranked No. 1 in the nation for coronary bypass surgery.

The 2011 CareChex Hospital Quality Ratings have been awarded, and Munson has been named first in the nation for medical excellence in coronary bypass surgery. CareChex is a medical quality rating service that compares quality of care to national, state and local standards using peer-reviewed methodologies.

Some of the things measured in the rating were patient safety, inpatient care quality, mortality and complication rates, and patient satisfaction. Munson scored in the top tenth of a percent on these measures for coronary bypass surgery.

Dr. Mack Stirling, director of cardiothoracic surgery at Munson, says the recognition is great, but it's more satisfying to know that it came from providing really excellent patient care.

"To receive this kind of recognition for our team approach to providing our patients quality surgical care is very rewarding," says Stirling, "Our goal remains to provide the best outcome for our patients."

The No. 1 rating follows another recent announcement that Munson Medical Center was named to the Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the country by Thomson Reuters, the seventh time Munson has received that recognition.

As a regional referral center, Munson Medical Center has more than 4,000 cardiac patients annually, including more than 600 open-heart surgery patients.
