Traverse City’s Plante & Moran recognized as one of top five workplaces in Michigan

One of the best places to work in the state turns out to be right in Traverse City. The Detroit Free Press announced its 2010 Top Workplaces survey, based on employee interviews, and on the list is local accounting and advisory firm Plante & Moran.

The survey judged small, midsize and large companies in different categories, and Plante & Moran received the No. 3 spot in the large companies category, putting it within the top five best large workplaces in the state.

The firm is among the nation's largest accounting and business advisory firms, and has also been recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the country's best places to work for 12 years running.

Plante & Moran Managing Partner Gordon Krater says the awards are all down to treating their employees right and giving them opportunities to be involved in the company.

"We need to be profitable, but we want to do it the right way, maintaining our culture and making investments in our team for the future," says Krater. "We mentor, we train and help our staff members advance. If you don't have anyone who cares and has vested interest in you, all the little perks don't matter."

Some of the practices that ensure Plante & Moran has a strong workplace culture and high employee satisfaction include assigning new employees a more experienced mentor, providing a professional training and networking program, a committee that supports balance of life issues like child care and new parents, and company volunteer initiatives with paid time off to support community efforts.

The firm also garnered another honor from the Free Press' awards: it got "Top Workplace Standout" in the large company leadership category, which judged employee confidence in the firm's leaders.
