Manistique is a true gem of the Upper Peninsula, snuggled on the shores of Lake Michigan as the seat of Schoolcraft County. The town has become known for its vibrant community and internal drive to succeed, its quality dining establishment and its draw for tourists, as well as the community's growing initiatives to promote healthy living. Visitors to the area enjoy breathtaking views of the lakeshore, as well as the Manistique River and the local lighthouse. The town, which was originally named Eastport, was officially put on the map in 1885 before being recognized in 1901 as a city by the state government. An interesting tidbit about the town is that its name actually comes from a misspelling in the city charter, as it was originally named after the Monistique River, which has also since been changed.
