Sweet Dreams Bakery opens in Munising

There are few things as satisfying as waking up to the smell of something great cooking--luckily for the residents of Munising, the scent of fresh-baked goodies are wafting through the air these days thanks to the Sweet Dreams Bakery.

The bakery, opened last year in Munising, is owned and operated by Cherri Lare, who has been baking cakes since she was just a young girl. She did some cake cooking and decorating out of her home until 1997 when she put the business on hold. In 2007, thanks to several factors--including being able to now buy supplies locally--she put a commercial kitchen in her home and began baking again.

"It was exciting to be able to drive to a store that had what I needed rather than have to go through mail order and wait a week to get something, by the time things would come in my inspiration would be gone," she says.

She knew she wanted to open a storefront eventually, but she didn't know where until she had a chance to picture Sweet Dreams in the Defrancesco building.

“I was very apprehensive and looked at many, many buildings before deciding that the Defrancesco building was the right place to be," Lare says.

The storefront, located at 105 East Superior Street, offers up scrumptious cake, cookies, donuts, muffins, croissants, scones and even items like hot and cold sandwiches, coffee drinks and homemade candies.

Lare says the shop is just one step in her ultimate goal, which is opening up a baking facility in the Wetmore Industrial Park and using the current location for a storefront with seating and retail sales.
