Sign of spring? Downtown Marquette Farmers Markets seeks vendor applications

What's happening: The Upper Peninsula’s largest farmers' market, the Downtown Marquette Farmers Marquette, has opened up its 2024 vendor application period -- one of the first actual signs of spring after an unusually warm winter. The Marquette Farmers Market, along with markets in Escanaba and across the U.P., draw thousands of customers during the summer. These markets provide direct sales for local farmers and artisans.

Economic driver: Despite its location in downtown Marquette, the biggest producers selling at the market come from north Delta and western Alger counties, where smaller farmers are flourishing. The large footprint of the market helps promote the walkability of the downtown district and provides a boost to businesses. All products sold at the market are required to be produced locally, helping different types of economic groups.

What they're saying: “We look for applicants who are passionate about what they do and are looking to bring an idea to life,” says Brian Shier, market manager. “We have options that work great with all vendor types, from vendors looking to start a business, or legacy vendors ready for another great year.”

What's next: More farmers and artisan markets are taking the next steps with local approvals this month. More than two dozen markets across the U.P. already on municipal agendas for March. Once these smaller markets lock down their dates, vendors will formalize their schedules and start to advertise where people can find their products through social media and websites.
