A rendering of the new state-of-the-art education building at the Marine Trades Institute.
What's happening: Construction has begun on a new state-of-the-art building at the Marine Trades Institute, formerly the Great Lakes Boat Building School, that will house its Marine Technology School. Site preparation, tree clearing, and the installation of fencing and signage have been completed. More than 10 area contractors have been selected for the project, emphasizing the Institute’s commitment to supporting the local economy.
About the new building: The 10,000-square-foot facility will be constructed using Mass Timber, an engineered wood known for its strength, durability, and sustainable properties. The new building will feature a dedicated workshop, a private dock, and modern classroom areas, all designed to provide comprehensive training for students enrolled in the Marine Service Technology Program. The project is set to double MTI's yearly enrollment capacity from 25 to 50 students, significantly expanding opportunities for aspiring marine technicians and boat builders.
What they're saying: "This new facility, bolstered by our partnership with Formula Boats, marks a pivotal moment for the Marine Trades Institute," says Nikki Storey, president of MTI. "It not only allows us to meet the growing demand for skilled marine technicians but also reinforces our commitment to providing students with the best possible training environment."
What's next: This expansion comes as MTI celebrates 20 years of providing hands-on training to individuals seeking careers in the marine industry. To commemorate this milestone, MTI will host a celebration on Friday, August 22nd, at Les Cheneaux Distillers in downtown Cedarville. Tickets are available, with all proceeds benefiting the student enrichment fund, which supports vital resources like field trips, new training initiatives, tools, and student life activities, all contributing to an exceptional student experience.
