Marquette General announces plan to build a new facility in Escanaba

The "Marquette" part of Marquette General Hospital's name is going to be a little misleading soon, as the hospital announced it will build a new medical clinic building in Escanaba.

The hospital's main medical facility will remain in Marquette, but the Escanaba facility will provide both primary and specialty health care in Delta County, says MGH president and CEO Gary Muller.

MGH currently has a medical building called Doctors Park in Escanaba, and the new building would go up next door to it, and eventually replace it. It's planned to be a 45,000-square-foot, two-story building, but the plans still need to go through MGH Board of Directors approval.

The administrators say it's not competition with OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba, but a complement to services offered there.

"This is a major commitment by Marquette General," says Muller. "It will build on our 20 years of service in Delta County, and strengthen our ties to St. Francis and the entire Delta community."

The facility is scheduled for action at the MGH board's summer meeting, when a cost budget can also be finalized. If it is, construction could begin as early as this fall.
