What's happening: Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Manistique has found its new CEO in Robert Mach. Mach takes over for previous CEO Andy Bertapelle, who left the Upper Peninsula for a similar role in Washington last April.
According to the Critical Access Hospital database, SMH is the largest Critical Access Hospital in the Upper Peninsula and provides a wider range of services than most non-profit hospitals statewide.
Who is Mach: Originally from Holly, Michigan, Mach served in the U.S. Marines before beginning his career as a radiology technologist. He then moved through various radiology management roles in Tennessee and Vermont and reached senior-level hospital administrative roles like COO and CEO in New Hampshire and Washington. He also previously served as CEO at Select Specialty Hospital in Battle Creek and Ascension Borgess Medical System’s hospitals in Allegan County.
Mach holds an MBA, as well as certified as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
What they're saying: “I am honored to join Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital and lead an organization that is deeply dedicated to its patients and the community,” Mach said. “I look forward to collaborating with the hospital’s talented staff, stakeholders and community to drive innovation, improve accessibility, and further enhance the exceptional care provided to our patients.”
What's next: Interim CEO Kent LaCroix will remain in the role until Mach starts in August. “The Board of Trustees is confident that Robert Mach’s experience and vision will lead us into a strong and sustainable future. We are excited to welcome him to our community," said Peter Hood, who is chair of the hospital board.
