Tourism fuels economic growth in the U.P.

What's happening: A newly released report shows tourism continues to be a powerful driver of regional growth in the U.P., with $1.6 billion in visitor spending in 2023, according to the Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation Association. That figure represents a 7.7 percent increase over 2022. The report was based on spending estimates provided by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Key findings: In terms of visitor spending, the top counties were Mackinac County, $309.4 million; Marquette County, $268.3 million; and Chippewa County, $176.2 million. Menominee County experienced the fastest-growing tourism economy, with year-over-year growth of 11.8 percent. Spending patterns showed record growth in lodging and a rise in dining experiences. Also noted were tourism's impact on employment, and tax revenue.

What they're saying: "Tourism is the economic backbone of the Upper Peninsula. From lodging and dining to outdoor adventure and local shopping, visitors provide vital support to our communities, businesses and workforce," said Tom Nemacheck, executive director of the Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation Association.

What's next:  As travel demand continues to rise, the U.P. is well-positioned for continued growth. Expanding tourism offerings, enhancing outdoor experiences, and promoting sustainable travel will ensure the region remains a top destination for visitors nationwide, officials said.
