At the annual
Operation Action U.P. meeting last week, three businesses were honored for their economic well being in their area of the Upper Peninsula.
The Western Lime Corporation of Gulliver, Potlach in Sawyer and Basic Marine in Escanaba were all given awards this year.
"Operation Action U.P. has long since held the tradition of recognizing noteworthy accomplishments of various U.P. businesses at its annual meeting," says Brett French, co-chair of Operation Action U.P. "2011 was no exception, as we highlighted the accomplishments of the recipients of the 2011 Operation Action U.P. Business Excellence Awards.
"Operation Action U.P. is a staunch advocate for U.P. businesses, working tirelessly to develop and diversify the regional economy while retaining and creating additional family sustaining jobs."
The annual meeting was held last Friday at the Great Lakes Room in Northern Michigan University's University Center. Speakers on the day included Dr. Susan Hedman, the EPA Region 5 Administrator who oversees operations in the entire Great Lakes region, an Doug Smith, senior vice president of strategic partnerships at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
In addition, the luncheon featured a panel of mining experts from Rio Tinto, Orvana Resources and HudBay Minerals.
