Keweenaw's Entrepreneur Support Center recognized nationally

The Entrepreneur Support Center in Hancock, a collaboration between MTEC SmartZone and Finlandia University, has earned a bit of recognition for its efforts.

The center was recently given an international economic development award at the Computerworld Laureate Honors Program, which was hosted in Washington, D.C.

The center was awarded for playing a role in economic development by using information technology to create, enable, improve or expand business and job opportunities, advance a positive work environment and provide support for entrepreneurs.

Jonathan Leinonen, the MTEC SmartZone program director, accepted the award.

"It is an honor to accept the award on behalf of entrepreneurs who overcome fear and adversity and make a commitment to the economic and social well-being of our community, state and nation," he says.

The center contended with some big brand names to earn the award, too. Hewlett-Packard, Boston Technologies and Kellogg were all in the running.

"I knew it was highly competitive," says Leinonen. "But community involvement to start businesses set our program apart."
