Escanaba participates in Merit's first multi-site distance learning course

Sitting in Escanaba and learning about Linux security from a class being taught in Ann Arbor isn't an everyday occurrence--but it might be soon enough.

Merit Network recently held its first professional distance learning course that allowed participants to receive training in three virtual locations while the class itself was being taught at Merit's offices in Ann Arbor. Virtual classrooms were set up in Escanaba, Flint and Grand Rapids.

By having the courses offered virtually, Merit is making the distance barrier for students and educators a thing of the past. The company indicates it plans to expand the courses in number as well as scope.

"Michigan is a very large state, and we know that budgets and staffing are stretched," says Andy Rosenzweig, manager of professional learning for Merit Network. "If we can find ways to allow people to achieve their professional development goals without the cost of travel and extended time out of the office, that will be a great benefit for our Members and for Michigan."

And the course's virtual participants are not just sitting there watching a TV screen, either. Each site allowed for a fully-interactive experience, including asking questions and providing feedback through the video connection. The use of desktop collaboration software made sharing coursework and presentations with each student possible.

A total of 32 participants attended the class, including seven in Escanaba.
