MTEC gets award for job creation

MTEC SmartZone's purpose is to do a lot for the Keweenaw business community, incubating high-tech businesses. They're clearly succeeding at that, receiving the Keweenaw Spark Plug Award for growth this year.

The SmartZone was nominated by Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce and Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance members, who recognized the incubator for its significant contributions to the economic vibrancy of local business in 2012.

MTEC SmartZone CEO Marilyn Clark accepted the award, saying, "I grew up here, and it's important to me that the Keweenaw remains vibrant. MTEC SmartZone strives to be a global organization that embraces the talent and intellect of people who live here, and that's what we do."

Among MTEC SmartZone's achievements in 2012: creating 52 jobs and attracting Fortune 500 companies Dematic and ControlTec to Houghton. It also created the Entrepreneurial Training Center, which currently has six companies working to bring their business concepts to market.
