Sweetgrass golf course opens for season

It may have just been snowing, but that hasn't kept golfers and greenskeepers from preparing for spring. And the Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris is one of the first to open its doors, with the first golfers of the year being welcomed April 25.

Sweetgrass has a big year coming up, as it hosts the Ladies Professional Golf Association Futures Tour this summer. Sweetgrass CEO Tom McChesney says U.P. golfers can take advantage of the early course opening before the tour arrives.

"We're encouraging golfers to play the course before the LPGA Futures Tour arrives in late June," says McChesney. "The nuances of the course make it a great challenge and a fun round from now through October."

Early spring greens fees for the public course are $40 until May 31, and are $75 after that. There also are play-and-stay golf and hotel packages start at $95 midweek for double occupancy. Golfers looking for a longer visit also might try out other U.P. courses like Greywalls in Marquette and Timberstone in Iron Mountain. In fact, Sweetgrass offers a special called "Perfect Foursome," with play at all three courses, hotel stays, and a stay at the Island Resort and Casino in Harris.

All three courses have been listed as top Michigan public courses by Golfweek magazine. McChesney also encourages large groups to take advantage of Sweetgrass' new conference center and patio, which hosts up to 800 people. The new center will open May 1.

Sweetgrass Golf Club opened up in 2008 and was named Best New Course by Golfweek in 2009. It's located at the Island Resort and Casino and is operated by the Hannahville Indian Community of the Potawatomi Nation.
