Timber Products of Iron Mountain named best small business of the year for U.P.

Each year, the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center honors a small business from each of the state agency’s regional offices as the recipient of the Best Small Business Award.

For the U.P. in 2010, that company is Timber Products of Iron Mountain, which was one of more than 16,000 companies statewide who participated in counseling and training through one of the centers. Thirteen companies overall were given the awards for 2010.

They were chosen based on their successful job creation, increase in sales, improvements in business strategy, and involvement with the small business centers.

Timber Products is owned by Candy Lauk, has 27 employees, including four owner-operators, and specializes in long-haul and LTL trucking, running mostly in the Midwest, although it is authorized in 48 states. It worked with representatives from the U.P. regional office, located in Escanaba.

"I want to thank all the dedicated Timber Products employees, the banks and (business counselor) Robert Furno who were willing to work with us, our customers who remained faithful, and especially MI-SBTDC consultant Jim Beauchamp for believing in us and for his on-going help and friendship," says Lauk.
