Michigan's unemployment program to hold four U.P. seminars for employers

An uncommon job has opened up in Sault Ste. Marie, one that offers the chance to develop a community program, train the next generation of musicians, and build a self-employed career.

It's a position for a Suzuki violin teacher at the Soo Theatre Arts Resources Studios, which are part of the Soo Theatre Project. The teacher would be an independent contractor with the school, meaning it's not a typical payroll position, but a contractual agreement with a self-employed violin teacher to give lessons on-site in a provided studio.

Gina Gough, Soo Theatre business manager, says the position is currently a part-time one, but could expand to full-time as the student base increases over time.

"It really has to be someone that's willing to work with us to build up the Suzuki program," she says. "We're looking for the ability to provide ongoing instruction."

The job requirements are simple: be a qualified Suzuki violin teacher who can start and develop a program for young -- and very young -- violin students using the Suzuki teaching method. Other violin teachers already instruct older children and adult students at the school.

The school, STARS, has been developing for the last five years, and offers classes in dance, yoga, theatre, music, and the visual arts, as well as private music lessons, and the chance to participate in performing groups.

Gough says the best applicant will be one who has a passion for teaching and for music, as the program is a nonprofit organization that is community-focused.

"Here at STARS we obviously are very focused on expanding cultural opportunities to the entire community," she says. "Our goal is to expose as many people to the arts as possible."
