War Memorial makes short list of 13 Michigan hospitals for heart failure treatment

U.S. News and World Report is known for its health care rankings, and its August edition has good news for Sault Ste. Marie: War Memorial Hospital is one of just 13 hospitals in Michigan that received the American Heart Association's endorsement for its excellent treatment of heart failure.

The hospital has been working on an AHA program, "Get with the Guidelines," which lays out objectives for heart failure patients, and has continually improved its standing with the program over the past three years.

This summer, War Memorial finally received a gold recognition for its high standards of care, and hot on the heels of the award came the U.S. News and World Report edition.

"This is the first time we've appeared in this publication," says hospital CEO David Jahn. "It proves that we are very focused on providing quality care to our patients. I look at this as validation that we are one of the best hospitals in the country for providing care to patients with heart failure."

The article listed hospitals throughout the U.S. that are in compliance with "Get with the Guidelines," and although 13 were from Michigan, the others were mostly larger hospitals such as University of Michigan Hospital, Borgess Health, and Henry Ford Hospital.

"Of the 13 from Michigan, we are certainly one of the smallest hospitals," Jahn says.

Best of all, Jahn says, the listing confirms War Memorial is on the right track as far as providing good care to patients and serving the community.
