Nine Bay County high school seniors volunteered more than 400 hours during their high school careers, earning the Youth Changemaker Award, part of the Governor’s Youth Service Awards.
The
Michigan Governor Youth Service Awards acknowledge Michigan youth for their achievements and encourages youth to engage in a lifetime of service. The
Michigan Community Service Commission recognizes and celebrates outstanding high school students who provide volunteer service to their communities.
The Bay County students, and the number of hours they logged, are:
- Zoe Piotrowski from Bay City Central High School with 401 hours.
- Asher Neville from Bay City Central High School with 434 hours.
- Taylor Santhany from Bay City Central High School with 412 hours.
- Kathryn Rosenbrock from Bay City Western High School with 400 hours.
- Alex Armstrong from John Glenn High School with 521 hours.
- Caeli Schultz from John Glen High School with 420.25 hours.
- Nathan Turow from John Glenn High School with 485.75 hours.
Nicole Luczak, CEO of the United Way of Bay County, says the students and community benefit from the work of these teens.
"Volunteerism is a form of civic engagement that is so important for our youth to learn at a young age,” Luczak says. “It creates a sense of community, helps them learn about the needs around them, and also about themselves.”
More information about the service awards and how to take advantage of volunteer opportunities for teens are available on the United Way website.
“United Way is invested in this work, not just for the immediate benefit it provides to our community but for the long-term goal of creating a connection to our region that will draw young talent to build their lives here,” Luczak says.
“We are cultivating a generation of leaders who understand philanthropy and social responsibility, which will strengthen and grow our community."
