Applegate Insulation Expands Operations With New Facility in Colorado

One of the Capital region’s most successful companies, Applegate Insulation, recently opened a cellulose insulation facility in Penrose, Colo.

Applegate Insulation manufactures cellulose insulation, which is greener and more efficient than fiberglass.

“The reason we’re expanding is that the public is finally finding out that fiberglass is the big boy on the block,” Applegate says.“We’ve had a tough row to hoe, because we’re going up against the big guys.”

The struggle’s been worth it.

“Now people realize this can heat about 30 to 40 percent cheaper than fiberglass,” Applegate says. “We’ve been expanding for 20 years.”

The original Applegate factory started in Okemos in 1978 and quickly expanded to Maryland, Georgia, Louisiana and Kentucky. Applegate also has plants in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Applegate eventually went west, opening a new facility in Arizona, which closed in the 1980s.

“We wanted to get back out west so we decided to go ahead and pick the plant in Colorado,” Applegate says.

“We don’t have plans for another state yet; we don’t want to get into trouble. Yes, we’ll be expanding. We’re going to cover the whole country for sure.”
