Old Town artists Kat Lusch expanded her 100 square foot office space and 450 square foot workspace into a gallery for area artists.
“With being right here on Grand River and trying to get into galleries and not liking the terms, I realized I could give emerging artists an even playing field,” she says.
Lusch uses the front offices and the conference rooms in front of her office space to display other artists’ work. She also participates in Old Town’s gallery walks.
Known as the Artists Underground, Lusch’s space at Devon Self Storage draws not only artists, but musicians and poets. An estimated 50 artists show their work in Lusch’s space.
“Some artists have lost their jobs and can’t sell their art because they’re trying to make ends meet,” she says. “I would like to provide grants or loans for artists.”
Lusch moved to Lansing from Ohio two years ago.
“We went to Old Town and I immediately fell in love with it,” she says.
She works with stained glass, fused glass and recycled materials and owns the company, Freyia’s Fire.
