Downtown Lansing Improvements Attract New Credit Union Association

As part of an effort to get more associations back into the heart of the state’s capital, the City of Lansing is rolling out the welcome mat to Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL).

Last week, the MCUL’s board of directors enjoyed a nice view of the bustling Capitol from their spot on the ninth floor of the Troppo building.

“There are good things happening in this city,” says Patrick La Pine, executive vice president of the MCUL. “This is probably the best intersection in town.”

The MCUL moved roughly 24 employees to the 6,800 square foot Lansing location from Livonia in January. La Pine says the city’s commitment to revitalizing the town, the association’s visibility and the streetscape improvement program attracted the MCUL back to the city.

The City of Lansing wants to entice many associations who have small satellite offices in Lansing back to the downtown where they’ll have immediate access to state legislators.

“People pay tens of thousands of dollars for networking, and it unfolds on our own streets all the time for free,” says Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, adding that a Downtown location will afford the MCUL the opportunity to rub shoulders with legislators during their lunch hours.

La Pine says he’s hoping the MCUL’s relocation will encourage additional credit unions to have a Downtown presence. NuUnion Credit Union is located in Downtown Lansing.
