Michael Mahdi, owner of The New Daily Bagel in Downtown Lansing, is wrapping up his façade improvement plan.
Mahdi’s already built out the exterior windows of the Daily Bagel, bringing the storefront back to what it might have looked like in the early 1900s. The bay
windows don’t add any space to the restaurant, but they are inviting and open up the restaurant.
“The customers were excited with how fast we did that,” Mahdi says.
Mahdi will also add new awnings to the front of his building. He’s working with the City of Lansing to make sure his façade improvements honor the historical integrity of the building.
The City of Lansing has helped several businesses improve their facades. Mahdi says such improvements encourage other business owners to take pride in the exterior or their buildings.
“Sooner or later they will renovate,” he says about his neighbors. “The renovations will make more people take care of their building. It makes the old ones look out of place.”
Mahdi is thinking about expanding his business to the second floor of the building. He wants to add conference space to the second floor, which would give him about 1,700 square feet of additional space.
