Native Detroiter Opens Five Acre Garden Center in Charlotte

Detroit native Tammy Boatman just opened the Boatman Garden Center on a five-acre piece of property in Charlotte, Mich. The full service center sells everything from mulch and sand to perennials, veggies, herbs and hanging baskets.

“That’s my true passion,” says Boatman about gardening.“There’s nothing out here and I thought, 'Let’s just give this a try and see what happens.'”

Boatman bought the former tile store in January and opened the center in April.

“We’ve had some really good feedback,” Boatman says. “We’ve gotten a lot of great comments and the people in this area are happy to have something close. They have a really positive attitude about wanting to support local business instead of going to big box stores.”

Boatman is trying to add a farmer’s market to the center. Realistically, the farmer’s market will not be ready to open until mid-to-late July.

“It seems like so many people are trying to get healthier and save money and support local people,” she says.

Boatman also hopes to build a greenhouse on the property. The Boatman Garden Center is located at 5103 Lansing Rd. in Charlotte.
