The federal government is setting up a Census 2010 location on Lansing’s Southside, a move that’s prompted the $300,000 redevelopment of a long-vacated 6,000 square foot building.
The 910 Southland space is being completely gutted to accommodate Census 2010 employees. Work on the building began in July and should be complete by October.
“I’m excited about the economic hub that this will be,” said Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero at a press conference announcing the renovation of the space.
Census 2010 will only be in Lansing through the end of 2010, but will create roughly 2,000 temporary and part-time jobs during that time.
“Being in the State Capital is important,” says Jason Mackie with Census 2010. “Michigan is unique because the Capital is at the center of the state.”
Census 2010 needs 50 managers and up to 2,000 field staff to complete the Census data. Mackie says Census 2010 plans to hire local workers.
“This really is the equivalent of a factory opening in Lansing,” Bernero said.
