$2.5 Million Renovation of 25,000 Sq Ft Okemos Community Church Underway

Nearly the entire 25,000 square foot area of the Okemos Community Church in Meridian Township is undergoing a renovation.

The $2.5 million renovation will encompass three quarters of the building, according to Lee McAllister, who is head of the Renovation Oversight Committee for the church.

“We started thinking about the renovation two to three years ago,” McAllister says. “Originally we thought about an addition, but we realized that no, what we really need is a renovation.”

After two years of fundraising, the church finally had enough funds to start the project. Everything but the sanctuary and the kitchen will be renovated.

Construction on the project started in January. McAllister says he expects to see completion by August.

“A big part of this is energy efficiency for the church,” McAllister says. “We need new windows and we’re putting new insulation on the walls. The lights will go off when someone’s not in the room. The bathrooms will all be automated. We’re trying not to use as much energy as we do right now.”
