First Phase of Cooley Library's $6 Million Downtown Expansion Open to Students

The first phase of a $6 million renovation to the Cooley Law School library is now open to students. It features a 24-hour study hall, a 43-seat student lounge and the latest in computer technology.

The expansion is named the Center for Research and Study, 333 S. Capitol Ave., and when complete will fill the former two-story Lansing Town Center building, situated between the Cooley Center and Thomas E. Brennan Law Library.

“Students today have new expectations when it comes to learning and now we are able to provide that,” says Jim Robb, associate dean of development for Cooley.

He says it has always been Cooley’s mission to acquire buildings in the community and renovate them, rather than simply building new structures.

“The [former Town Center] building was in disuse—a shell of a building—and we brought it back to life,” says Robb. “That is consistent with what we want to do in the community.”

The second phase will renovate the second floor of the building and will hold 429 students in two classrooms and multiple private study rooms.

Once the full renovation is complete, the Cooley law library will span nearly 139,000 square feet, making it the second largest law library in the nation, says Robb.
