The Courthouse Square Association in Charlotte is spending $100,000 to restore the 1873 Sheriff’s Residence.
The slate shingles on the historic building, which is also the original Eaton County Jail, are broken and in need of repair and replacing.
“Hopefully this will make it more sustainable so that we won't have to go back and fix the same things over and over again,” says Jeralyn Bohms with the Courthouse Square Association.
The tower in front of the Sheriff’s Residence also needs a little TLC. The cresting needs replacing and the flat roof needs some improvements.
“It’s always ongoing,” Bohms says about the renovations. “There’s always something going on, but it’s not usually this large-scale.”
All of the buildings that comprise the Courthouse Square are on the historic register.
