The Michigan Dental Association (MDA) is building a $4.2 million headquarters in Meridian Township.
The MDA has occupied its 230 N. Washington Sq. building in Downtown Lansing since the 1970s. The MDA hopes to be moved into its new 26,675 square foot building by June 2009.
The current MDA office is 40,000 square feet, so the move is effectively a space downsize.
“We certainly don’t want to give anyone the impression that we’re leaving Downtown for any reason,” says Tom Kochheiser with the MDA. “We’re really going to miss Downtown. This project has been going on for years in various forms. We looked carefully at all of our options. It’s too costly to renovate this building and we really don’t need this much space any more.”
From a staff perspective, the MDA is not downsizing. Its 52 employees will also move to the Meridian Township location, which will sit on a 3.1-acre plot at Okemos Road and Coyote Creek Road.
The Meridian Township space is easy for members and employees to access because it sits near several highways, Kochheiser says.
“We’re doing as much as we can to be green and environmentally friendly although we’re not going to go for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification,” Kochheiser says.
