East Lansing Puts $4 Million into New Avondale Square Acquisitions

The City of East Lansing is spending $4 million to acquire more than 10 properties on the 600 block of Virginia Avenue in East Lansing with plans to turn the property into new homes and townhouses.

Once all of the properties are acquired, the city will demolish the existing homes, most of which are rentals, and put up 30 new homes including 14 townhouses and 16 single family homes.

“This is a major part of our objective to increase homeownership around schools,” says Stephanie Gingerich, with the City of East Lansing.

Twelve of the units will be set-aside for households earning no more than 80 percent of Area Median Income (51,900 for a family of four) and the rest will be market rate units. Private investment in the homes should net $7 million.

The city plans to break ground on the property Nov. 2.
