A $35 million construction project on Farm Lane, which runs through Michigan State University’s (MSU) campus, is underway and slated to be completed by 2009.
The massive road project is designed to make the Farm Lane corridor more pedestrian friendly, says Jeff Kacos, director of Campus Planning and Administration at MSU.
Farm Lane’s structural design makes it hard for bikers, walkers and cars to share the road. A large part of
the conflict derives from the train that runs directly through the property.
The Farm Lane project will redirect traffic under the train tracks, getting rid of the conflict between cars, pedestrians and the train. This change will allow for extended bike lanes and a pedestrian friendly route.
“This will also separate the bicycles and the pedestrians, making it safer for both,” Kacos says.
