Come July, Delhi Township will be opening its very own farmer’s market.
Delhi
Township is spending $40,000 to renovate the 3,500 square foot fire
station at 2150 Cedar Street in Holt so local farmer’s can display their wares
later this summer. The former fire station has enough room for roughly
15 booths indoors, and another 20 outside.
“When it’s all said and done, we’re going to have a pretty good-sized market,” says the project's organizer, Chuck Grinnell.
Grinnell
says the community is ready for a farmer’s market. Delhi Township
residents have access to plenty of grocery stores, but they need to
travel into Lansing or East Lansing to find fresh produce at a farmer’s
market, he says.
“We have a number of
farmer’s markets available in Ingham County, but the unique thing we’ll
be able to offer is indoor availability,” Grinnell says. “We’ll be open
rain or shine and we’ll be open right into December.”
Other
area farmer’s markets close when the weather gets bad because they are
outdoor-only markets. Grinnell says it will take a little while to
build a client base, but “let ‘em have two to three days of bad
weather, then they’re going to be lining up at our back door.”
“In the long run I expect it to be the premier market,” he says.
