In an effort to impress the importance of green building on the future of the region, the East Lansing City Council recently passed a resolution supporting the 30 percent improvement in residential efficiency embodied in the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).
“This is an important issue in terms of green building because buildings use about 30 percent of all the energy in this country,” says East Lansing Director of Code Enforcement and Neighborhood Conservation, Howard Asch.
The IECC is updated annually by the International Code Council (ICC), an organization made up of building code officials from throughout the country. This year, from September 15th through 23rd, the ICC will meet in Minneapolis, Minnesota. to update the IECC. The State of Michigan bases its codes on the IECC.
The 30 percent standard will impact any new or significantly rehabbed structures that have to comply with city codes.
“In a day where approximately 40 percent of the nation’s energy use comes from buildings, this type of improvement will help to reduce our carbon footprint and our overall energy waste,” he says.
