Now that the MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) is officially moved into its new 144,000 square foot building, IBM can open a new global delivery center in MSUFCU’s former headquarters.
IBM announced it will renovate the second floor of the old MSUFCU building, which is on Michigan State University (MSU)’s campus. IBM will create a center that provides application development and support services to modernize older and less efficient IT systems for state and local government agencies and universities.
IBM is expected to create at least 1,000 jobs over five years through the center, which is the first of its kind in the U.S. for IBM.
“We chose the MSU campus because MSU is willing to be a university partner and has a good on-campus location,” says Randy Zane with IBM.
MSU’s willingness to work with IBM on designing on an application development curriculum and its commitment to green initiatives also attracted IBM to the site, Zane says.
“Michigan State University shares the bold vision for the role technology plays in building a diverse 21st century economy,” says MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon. “Our partnership with IBM will involve a multidisciplinary approach that leverages the intellectual assets of several colleges, including business, engineering, natural science and social science.”
MSUFCU will continue using the first floor as one of its membership branches while IBM takes over 9,000 square feet on the second floor. The East Lansing-based credit union recently moved to a brand new, 144,000 square foot facility on the north side of Lansing.
“We had about 100 people working off site in rented quarters because we had no room for them at our main office, so we had to expand,” says Joyce Banish, marketing president for MSUFCU.
IBM will start working in the facility in the first quarter of this year and is expected to create 100 jobs by June.
