Arts Council of Greater Lansing Finalizes Plans for Move to Old Town

By the end of August or early September, the Arts Council of Greater Lansing will have a new home in Old Town.

The non-profit arts organization is moving from its 425 S. Grand Ave. location in Downtown Lansing to 1210 Turner St. in Old Town. Arts Council of Greater Lansing Executive Director Leslie Donaldson says the Arts Council will do some minor build out of the 670 square foot space before moving in.

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing sold the building it had owned since the 1970s to the City of Lansing in August 2008 and invested the funds from the sale into two new grant programs.

“In doing that back in August, we signed a lease with the city, and the lease was for one year,” Donaldson says.

Last fall, Donaldson looked at moving to Old Town, a neighborhood known for fostering the artistic community. But the space she was looking at flooded. Less than a year later, she found the perfect space.

“We’re very excited about this location,” she says. “It’s a store front location right next to Turner Park so it will allow us to have more visibility, which we hope will kind of heighten awareness of the Arts Council and the opportunities we provide.”

The new space is next to Studio 1210, which often hosts exhibits and performing arts activities.

“What we hope to do is help area artists and artistic groups get better access to that space, too,” Donaldson says.
