Bailey Neighborhood in East Lansing Lands $115,000 Grant for LED Street Lights

The Bailey Neighborhood in the City of East Lansing has been awarded a $115,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor, and Economic Growth, to be used for installation of Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs in their street lights.

The competitively awarded grant, which will include a 10 percent local match, makes it possible for the city to replace all of the old incandescent street bulbs in the Bailey Neighborhood. By replacing these bulbs with LEDs, East Lansing will lower its annual maintenance costs, reduce daily energy costs and cut back on long-term replacement costs over the life of the bulb.

“In addition to the positive environmental impact of LED lights, this installation will create a tremendous cost savings for the city on both a short and long term basis,” says Theodore Staton, city manager of East Lansing. “Street lighting is the second largest user of electricity in the city, so the environmental and economic impacts alone are huge.”

This is one of the first residential LED demonstration projects to be taken on by a Michigan community on a broader scale.
