First Round of IBM Hiring Targets 40 Programmers for East Lansing Center

In a recent recruiting blitz yielding 200 applicants, IBM reps interviewed 90 people for 40 programming positions at its new center on the Michigan State University (MSU) campus. The company expects to have 100 employees in place by June.

“These entry-level positions at IBM are like a feeder system for the new economy here,” says John Hill, director of Alumni Career Services at MSU. After they’ve been at IBM for awhile, the men and women could spin off into the local tech community, and maybe even start their own companies."

The IBM offices will be in rented space at a branch of the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union on MSU’s campus.

Capital Area Michigan Works, the workforce development agency, is helping to recruit the new employees.

The new programmers’ tasks will include IT support of IBM’s clients. Recruits are expected to have a bachelors degree in computer science or information technology, or receive a degree in May, a 3.0 grade point average and have internship or co-op experience.
