Plante & Moran Wins Fortune Magazine's Great Place to Work Award

For the eleventh time, Plante & Moran has made the Fortune “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, with a ranking this year of 44.

Doug Rober, of the East Lansing office, has been with the certified public accounting firm for 18 years. He started there upon graduation from Western Michigan University. For him, the flexibility of hours and the mentoring relationships established there are part of what makes it a great place to work.

Rober, 40, and his wife have two boys, 4 and 5 years old.

“I can slip out to attend one of the boy’s T-ball games, take him home, and go back to work if I want to,” he said. Or, he can stay home, log in and work remotely.

Client needs can demand structured and intense schedules for a time. But then employees can take some breathing space.

“We’re encouraged to manage our own time,” he said.

Now a partner with the Southfield-based company, Rober values the relationships forged there. On the first day of work, a new employee is assigned a buddy to help him or her find things and learn the system. But that buddy frequently remains a mentor for years.

According to the Fortune web site, Plante & Moran has offices in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Shanghai, China. Employees are offered paid sabbaticals, subsidized gym memberships, and 66 hours of professional training per year. Nearly 20,000 people apply for its 1,500 jobs.
