Arts Council of Greater Lansing Celebrates 45 Years of Collaboration and Support

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing has been hard at work over the last 45 years, leading, advocating for and advancing arts and culture in the Capital region.

It "was the first arts council incorporated in our state,” says Leslie Donaldson, executive director.

The Council has an interesting history, beginning with a collaboration of nine Lansing arts groups that formed the Lansing Fine Arts Coordinating Committee in 1962, after the Junior League of Lansing studied the feasibility of collaboration between local arts organizations.

But it wasn’t until 1965, when the Committee incorporated into a membership-based group — the Metropolitan Lansing Fine Arts Council — that its collaborative impact was bolstered, helping with the coordination, promotion and development of cultural activities throughout the Capital region.

“We have been fortunate to have always had trailblazing and innovative individuals in our region who been committed to supporting and building our arts and cultural community,” says Donaldson.

“I look forward to building upon their legacy as we further enhance support for our artists, creative innovators, and cultural organizations in our region through our work in implementing the Cultural Economic Development Plan,” she adds.
