MSU Federal Credit Union 2007 Growth Reaches 25 Percent

The MSU Federal Credit Union, which is the largest university-based credit union in the country, grew by 25 percent in 2007 bringing its net assets to $1.41 billion.

MSU Federal Credit Union was started in 1937 by Michigan State University (MSU) faculty and staff who wanted to lend money to ordinary people, which was something banks were not interested in at that time.

Since then, MSU has been a leader in banking innovations. It was the first credit union to put ATMs on campus, was quick to consolidate statements and jumped at the opportunity to allow customers to complete 41 transactions on line.

“This has all spurred growth because people can access their accounts more easily,” says Joyce Banish, MSU Federal Credit Union’s vice president of marketing.

MSU Federal Credit Union is also in the midst of building a new headquarters in East Lansing off of Coolidge Road.

“We’re always looking at key areas where we have pockets of members we could service by building another branch,” says Banish.
