Delta Township may be a small community, but it’s making
a big effort to get its citizens and businesses to go green. Delta Township
recently sponsored its first “Greener Delta” event, a $14,000 production
that attracted 1,500 residents and businesses.
“We wanted to encourage people and let them know not only
do you need new green energy construction, you can retrofit your existing homes
and you can buy your green products from our commercial district,” says
Janice Vedder with Delta Township.
At the event, citizens were exposed to green products such
as hybrid cars, E-85 ethanol-fuel vehicles, solar cars and other green products.
“We thought if we start out with an emphasis on
education, but also on economic development, we might be a step ahead,” Vedder
says.
For the last couple of years, Vedder has traveled around
the state checking out green events in Huron County and other parts of the
state. These events have brought wind turbines and encouraged
green building in those areas. Vedder thought Delta Township was ready to the
do the same, so she orchestrated this event, which she plans to make an annual
awareness campaign.
“We also hope to manufacture green products in Delta
Township,” she says.
