Williamston-Based Interior Design Business Grows by 41 Percent

Since opening Hart-Davidson Designs in 2004, Leslie Hart-Davidson has seen her business grow by 41 percent and her employee base quadruple.

Hart-Davidson Designs is an interior design company Hart-Davidson started in 2001 in New York. In 2004, Hart-Davidson and her husband moved to the Midwest and Hart-Davidson brought her company with her.

“My original intent was custom home fashions, and now that’s just a piece of the puzzle,” Hart-Davidson says. Hart-Davidson offers full-service design, advice on finishing, color consultations and space planning.

“The reason why it is so successful is because I give clients what they want, not what I tell them,” she says, adding that her design philosophy is “design is a democracy, not a dictatorship.”

Hart-Davidson also offers community education classes that include topics like, “decorating your house without killing your spouse.” She says these classes, which she offers at local libraries, give her exposure and increase her client base.

Hart-Davidson says being in the home design business insulates her from fluctuating housing markets.

“In good times I’m helping customers move into new constructions; and in bad times, I’m helping them remodel,” she says.

Hart-Davidson has outgrown her current Williamson-based studio space and is looking to double her floor space.
