More that 50 Lansing-area businesses have joined Capital Area Local First, a group of business owners who are working together to increase awareness of locally owned businesses.
“Its not just about supporting local businesses, but the reasons behind it,” says Katharine Czarnecki with the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Supporting local businesses promotes sustainability, as well as the local economy, she says.
The group formed in September 2007, has held several networking events, applied for non-profit status and put out a Local First directory showing residents where they can buy locally produced or locally sold products.
“I think that from the first event and putting out our first directory, it’s really increased awareness for some businesses,” Czarnecki says.
