Impression 5 Science Center Brings $150,000 Federal Grant to Downtown Lansing

Mid-Michigan’s innovative cultural activity center, the Impression 5 Science Center, recently got a $150,000 federal grant its been working toward for years.

Impression 5 Executive Director Erik Larson says the money will be used to build a new life sciences exhibit in the Center’s existing building.

The exact exhibit details are still being worked out, but Larson wants the exhibit to get kids excited about a career in biotech, nanotech and other science-based industries.

“This is a way for a cultural center like Impression 5 to get kids and adults thinking about these careers,” he says.

School groups make up a large portion of Impression 5’s visitors. In the past couple of years, districts have been trimming their budgets, so Impression 5’s made a real effort to make sure the exhibits meld with the academic curriculum.

“Impression 5 wants to play an active role in youth career development,” Larson says.

Impression 5 will start working on the design this fall and hopes to have the new exhibit, which will take up 3,000 square feet, up and running within the next few years.
