Michigan State University (MSU) is taking the opportunity
to put in new green spaces throughout campus whenever it has to tear up the
ground for electrical work or water main updates.
“One of the primary goals of the 2020 master plan is to
enhance the pedestrian environment and increase safety,” says Campus Planner
Steve Troost.
MSU recently installed a new green space behind Kedzie
Hall. The school took advantage of a major maintenance project to get rid of a
parking lot and put in some green space. This adds to the campus’ beauty, but
getting rid of parking lots also makes campus more pedestrian-friendly, Troost
says.
The new green spaces seek to achieve another goal:
reducing the school’s carbon footprint. Troost says the new green spaces also will
hopefully catch polluted water that would otherwise drain into the Red Cedar
River.
Troost says he does not know how many new green spaces
will be installed in the next couple of years. He says it all depends on how
many maintenance projects the campus completes.
