Meridian Township Tally of Green Star Businesses Grows to 30

Meridian Township has brought its Green Star designated business tally to about 30. The latest additions to that list include the Traveler’s Club, Dusty’s Cellar and the Blue Gill Grill.

“The basic idea is to create a network of businesses that are interested in this, to share a network of ideas and even waste with each other,” says LeRoy Harvey, recycling coordinator for Meridian Township.

To get the designation, a business has to agree to recycle at least two items. The organizers are working on creating a tiered Green Star designation program, which would allow businesses to achieve a higher standard. For example, businesses that want a silver or platinum designation would have to recycle five or six items.

Many of the businesses share recycled items with each other. For example, one company may give recycled Styrofoam to another company to use for packing material.

“Rather than being required to recycle, this is more of an upbeat thing,” Harvey says. “This is a way to be recognized and promote your business and celebrate those who are trying to be green.”

Meridian Township is expanding this program to other communities.
